Where is Tohoku?
Tohoku is in northern Honshu, Japan’s main island, and if you thought Hokkaido was remote, just wait until you ride here. These resorts haven’t hit the mainstream yet, so you’ll skip the crowds and ride untouched powder like it’s your own private stash.Even though Tohoku is off the beaten path, getting here is relatively straightforward. From Tokyo Station, the Shinkansen bullet train gets you to Morioka Station in just a few hours and drops you at the doorstep of Japan’s quietest powder playgrounds. We’ll explore three prefectures in the region: Aomori, Iwate and Akita.

Japow is Famous for a Reason
Japanese powder is some of the lightest, driest, and deepest snow on the planet. It forms thanks to Japan’s unique weather patterns, where cold Siberian winds pick up moisture from the Sea of Japan, then dump it as powder over the mountains. Resorts like Geto Kogen and Appi Kogen average over 14 meters (45 feet) of Japow each season.
Each small group (max 4 people) will have their own van and guide and we will explore as many of the under the radar resorts and as much of the backcountry as we can.
Japanese Culture and Relaxing Onsens
Onsens are a must-do part of any trip to Japan, and Tohoku is the perfect place to experience them. These natural hot spring baths are heated by volcanic activity and contain natural minerals like sulfur, sodium chloride, and iron. Onsens are deeply rooted in Japanese culture and they’re particularly helpful for muscle recovery, stress relief, and even sleep. The buoyancy of the water can also ease tension in your joints.
Sound perfect for a post-ski activity?
We thought so too.On this trip, two of our hotels—Hachimantai Mountain Hotel and Shizukuishi Prince Hotel—offer free onsens for you to enjoy.

Skiers and snowboarders, intermediate to expert level. Guests should already be comfortable skiing or riding in powder and are able to link fluid turns in black and double black diamond terrain (if heading off-piste). Advanced groups will predominantly be riding in the trees or open, gladed terrain and we will spend relatively little time on groomed runs. While the terrain is generally not that steep, some of the trees can be tight at times.
Intermediate groups will spend more time riding inbounds in the resort looking for powder at the side of the trails or on the edge of the trees. Once confidence and ability has been established in easier terrain, then intermediate groups can then start to venture off-piste.
